Wife and I are moving back more into the mountains. We unfortunately live in Franklin County right now and absolutely HATE IT. Schools, especially the high school is horrible and our oldest is a freshman this year. We have lived in White,Hall and Gilmer counties and know how the middle and elementary schools are there but have NO CLUE how the high schools are. Oldest child is VERY artistic, is in drama club and enjoys it so would certainly want that wherever we move to. She wants to go back to Gilmer County since she still has friends there but it's also more on the expensive side for us right now until I am done with college in April. We are considering these counties and need some help with figuring out which has the better schools

Hall- It would be be North Hall High school or Chestatee, have lived in Hall county before I know which areas I prefer
Dawson
Gilmer
Pickens
Fannin
White
POSSIBLY Cherokee county the northern part of it

Some of the mountain school systems sometimes seem to suffer from a lack of resources because of limited revenue-generating tax digests, especially when compared to their resource-rich counterparts in affluent North metro Atlanta suburbs (like Cobb, North Fulton, Gwinnett, Forsyth and Cherokee counties) and exurbs (like Hall and Jackson counties).

Because it is the hub of industrial and commercial activity for the Northeast Georgia Mountains region, Hall County is going to be one of the more resource-abundant school systems on your list of prospects.

Cherokee County is also a resource-rich school system on your list, while the amount of new upscale development spilling over into Dawson County means that school system generally very likely will have a growing amount of resources to work with.

And if you’ve got the northern half of Cherokee County on your list, then you probably should have the northern half of Forsyth County, which is one of the absolute most resource-rich school systems in the state of Georgia and in the Southeastern U.S.

While much of the southern half of Forsyth County has pretty much become outer-suburban Atlanta at this point in time, much of the northern half of Forsyth County is still exurban and rural Southern Appalachian foothills country. Forsyth County is also one of the highest-rated school systems in Georgia and the Southeastern U.S.

If you want to live in an outer-exurban/rural environment, North Hall and Dawson counties seem to be really good areas for you to target.

What is interesting (and also disappointing) is that the middle schools appear to be the weakest links (with the lowest ratings) in some of the North Georgia mountain and foothill school systems mentioned except for Forsyth and Cherokee counties in outer-suburban North metro Atlanta, and Fannin and Gilmer counties which both feature average and below-average ratings (respectively) in their high schools, and White County where most of the schools and the school system as a whole seem to be improving but appear to still need to continue to improve.

I know quite a few people who have kids who go to Chestatee and North Hall, and I would be comfortable with either one of those schools. North Hall is probably a little more affluent but either one should be solid.
