What are the best areas considering schools and neighborhoods. Far from the ghetto buy not deep in the suburbs. I'm looking to move in July 2016. First time home-buyer. Needs to be in a well diverse area ( I am African American so I already have my reservations) , great school, parks, and nearby accommodations such as markets and pharmacies. Looking forward to everyone's advice.

Thank You.

LaSheda,

Should I assume you're interested in living in the Atlanta/Metro Atlanta area? If so, please post this thread under Atlanta and not Georgia.

You are very rude. I was helping...Decatur and Marietta are in the Metro Atlanta area. I was only trying to help your post get as many responses as possible.

Wow... an attitude like that and you're going to get no help on this forum.

Good luck, you are really going to need it.

Budget?

1.) Due to traffic live close to where you are going to work or on a Marta line. Atlanta isn't Philly for public transportation. Marta is a cheap copy of Septa, Septa is where Marta may be in 20 years with growth.

2.) Where is your job located at?

3.) Northern suburbs have the highest ranked schools with Johns Creek being the leader according to the rankings.

4.) Segregation in large metro areas isn't based upon skin color but more by money these days.

I understand your reservation but the Atlanta metro area is one of the most progressive metros in the country, rated between Newark, NJ and Miami, FL.
Infographic of the Day: How liberal is Atlanta? - Atlanta Magazine

I'm a married, gay man and I live in Decatur. Decatur is like the Berkeley of Atlanta. It is very close to the core of Atlanta (Midtown and Downtown) but it has it's own vibe and active community. Very liberal and a great place to live. I'm not sure about the public schools. My kids are in private schools.

Marietta is in Cobb County. You will get more for your money in terms of housing but it is further out from the city center. Cobb politics can be iffy but it is quite diverse.

Have you looked at Lilburn or Lawrenceville? I know their school systems are quite good and you can also get a lot of house for much less compared to Decatur.

Good luck and welcome to Atlanta!

I should also add that Lilburn and Lawrenceville are located in Gwinnett County. Gwinnett has been rated the most diverse county in the Southeast for a while now.

Decatur and Marietta are actually at opposite ends of the metro area. There are pros and cons to both, but a lot of it would really depend on where your job is located. It also really depends on what you are considering to be "Decatur". Decatur proper and the unincorporated area of DeKalb County that is called "Decatur" are worlds apart in many ways. I am African-American and I left unincorporated DeKalb many years ago for various reasons.

My wife and I live in Gwinnett County, which is very diverse. Before that, I lived in Marietta for several years. Marietta has good and not-so-good areas depending on the neighborhood in question. Overall, it is still a safer bet than most parts of DeKalb County.
