My best friend and I grew up on Marco Island, Florida. It was a wonderful childhood, but Marco was 'discovered' in the 80's and lost it's charm. Neither of us will even go back to visit.

She lives in NH now and is looking to move back the Gulf Coast. She likes big cities or larger towns, but because she has 2 young boys wants something safe too.

Does anyone know of anything out there anywhere? She'd rather not go back to Florida as insurance and property taxes are nuts.

Default Effects of Katrina on Gulf Coast

It may be 5+ years before things are stable again along the Gulf Coast.

Pensacola, FL is supposed to be very nice--but if your friend doesn't want to live in FL...

There's always the Alabama Gulf coast. Gulf Shores. Orange Beach. Others I can't recall.
