Hello,

I'm in my mid 30s, single male, and working remotely. After much consideration, I have decided to relocate from Manhattan to Fort Lauderdale. I do not know anyone in Florida.

Ultimately I love the warm weather and beaches, and I love being outside in the sun - I feel like it gives me energy and health. I love playing tennis, and I have heard that there is a good scene for tennis in FTL.

I have heard Las Olas and Flagler Village are both good considerations. Which of these neighborhoods would you guys recommend? I would like to make new friends and meet cool people in my age bracket.

Any specific buildings with a good social vibe? I just would want to stay under 4500 for a 2bd , and it seems like most of the buildings I've looked at stay under that number.

I looked at Amaray and that seemed cool. I've heard Whitney in Flagler was nice as well. Does anyone have experience with those buildings?

Also I picked Ft. Lauderdale over Brickell/Wynwood in Miami. It appeared to me that the people in FTL were a bit more "real" and upscale. But then again I am not from the area and quick judgements are not always accurate. Did I make a mistake? Is miami "better"?

Miami is amazing, but it is true that there is a difference between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. The city of Miami is made up primarily of wealthy who have fled socialism and communism in South and Central America. While I applaud that, many of the families are not what you'd expect in a "neighborhood." They largely keep to themselves and aren't used to community living. Most of these families are used to living in compounds or really private communities so you do not get the same kind of social interaction.

It's not like Battery Park where everyone kind of hangs out and goes to the park down the street.

That's not to say that the greater Miami area isn't really good though... there are lots of places that are trendy and young professionals live. When people generally say "Miami" they kind of refer to the whole metropolis area.

...but I think you will do well moving to the Fort Lauderdale area. There's so many cool places to live. I assume you plan on renting at first? If you're not really familiar with the area, then rent. Lots of condos all up and down the intracoastal and shoreline. Biscayne Bay is a cool place to live, as is the area around Dania Beach and Hollywood.

I highly recommend you come down for a week though. You really need to see and feel the place for yourself before you make a decision. When you do finally move down, expect within 10 years to be married to a Jewish or Hispanic girl... haha... that's what happens.

Thank you for your response.

I will be renting first. I have looked at the Amaray in Los Olas - seems like a cool building.

Jewish and Hispanic girls like me quite a bit. I'm ok with this.

Coming from NYC I worry that I will be bored. That being said I want a change. Having a car, good weather, and outdoor activities are all appealing to me. I'm not one to go clubbing but I do like cool bars/lounges. I'm not looking for a sleepy beach town. I would like some action - but not the type of action you see on south beach.

Definitely East Las Olas. Flagler Village still gives me some nerves to walk around or living there. You may like or prefer to rent initially in a building with tennis courts that you can use as a renter for free. There is a section in the beach area Fort Lauderdale named Galt Ocean. I think that must be more suitable for your needs than Flagler Village. There is "Southpoint" building that actually are two oceanfront towers with great tennis courts. PM me for more info if you are interest.
