My husband will start work at SOUTHCOM in Doral on 1 June for 2 years. We currently live in Cobb County, GA (great house, schools, etc). I know that I will have to accept many changes with this move, but I'm hoping all of you great folks can give me some advice/info.

Here are our details:
*Renting only;$4500.00 max rent, ideally 4/3, 2300 sf min. and pet friendly. I've been told that this is a unicorn
*3 kids in high school (rising senior and freshmen) so schools are a top concern of ours and I'm not really familiar with the school option situation in FL. We can not afford private schools.
*My husband is used to a commute but would like to avoid the most terrible ones, of course.
*We are not a Spanish-speaking family (yet)

I'm open to all suggestions re: schools, areas to live, etc.
Thank you!
Jenna

**I will also post this to the Miami-Dade folks**

Definitely a bit of a unicorn given current market conditions but there are some possibilities if you act quickly. Here's a few...

(maybe worth considering with a fourth bedroom possibility with the dedicated office, excellent schools in Aventura, pet-friendly building and the feel of being on vacation for two years might be a nice break)

Hi Jenna! I worked a tour at US SOUTHCOM. I have many friends there still and keep in touch with them regularly. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.

For me, the trip wasn't so bad... it was about 35 minutes. I left in 2017, so it may have changed. But that was 35 minutes at 5:45 in the morning. I would hop on I-75 and take it down to the Palmetto, which would then drop me into Doral. At 5:45 in the morning, the trip on I-75 and the Palmetto was not bad at all... it was once I dropped into Doral that it took a large bulk of my time to navigate from the highway off ramp past the Welders Union, past Trump Doral Golf Resort, and then make a right opposite of the Carnival Cruise Lines. Plenty of good parking once you're on base though.

A lot of people live in Miramar... but I lived in the Cooper City / South West Ranches area.

You really do want a good school district. I recommend Cooper City if you can find a home up there. Your BHA should give you more than what you need to find a suitable place.

Happy to answer any other questions you might have... SOUTHCOM was a fantastic tour for me... and I miss it every day... very cool mission.

Weston, Southwest Ranches or Cooper City would be a good start. Your budget won’t go far, though.
