I was checking crime stats for Ft. Lauderdale on the web, and on the surface the crime rate appears to be bad for a city under 200,000 residents. But one very important aspect that is almost never taken into account when compiling crime stats are the tourists/visitors or non-residents. Crime stats are always calculated in relation to the permanent residents in a city. Ft. Lauderdale gets somewhere between 10 to 20 million visitors & tourists per year, which I assume would make the crime rate appear much worse than it otherwise would be.

Thoughts?

It depends where you go, but most places in Broward are very safe. I've lived here for 18 years and we love it. It's beautiful and our kids loved going to public school (they are in college now). Malls are safe. Beaches are safe. Honestly, the most dangerous thing is the driving, lol.

Some areas are much safer than others. I live on Las Olas and it is very safe.

Used to live in Weston—also safe.

Despite the tragedy at Stoneman Douglas HS, Parkland is also very safe.

The sticky in this forum does a good job showing the safety of various neighborhoods in Broward County, come to think of it.

Is broward the safest county in the Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm County trio? I know it’s definitely not Miami-Dade. And Riveria Beach and parts of WPB are rather dangerous. But I have yet to hear about dangerous cities in broward in the metro area.

Statistically it is higher than NYC, however in NYC it is almost impossible to miss. In FTL you have to go out of your way or do something real dumb.
