Hi! I'm visiting Florida in April and am interested in good food in the area. I am going on a cross country trip, so I am interested in places that are cheap, delicious, and represent the local culture. All opinions are appreciated!

I work at Bobby Rubino's Place for Ribs in Pompano Beach. I don't know if you're traveling alone, but we have coupons online that you can print out that is a buy one get one free rack of our delicious baby back ribs with one side or a quarter chicken/half rack and a side for $19.99. It's a great deal and yummy too. There are coupons in the paper every week also.

Cuban restaurants (such as Las Vegas, La Carreta) are very reasonably priced, and are a taste of local flavor.

Unfortunately, I have always found that Fort Lauderdale lacks these types of places. Try Zona Fresca southwestern. It has 2 locations, 1 in Fort Lauderdale and 1 in Pompano. It is similar to a Moe's or Chipolte, but has better quality and you can sit outdoors. Besides those I really cannot think of any.

The Downtowner in Fort Lauderdale is very reasonably priced, has been there forever, and has pretty good food (it's pub food). They have specials and live music on the weekends.

Tarks on US1 in Hollywood is a total dive, but the food is good for the price.

Texas Hold 'Em barbecue (US1 and Sunrise) has a great beer selection and delicious barbecue.

Jalisco (US1 in Fort Lauderdale) has good Cuban food at very reasonable prices. The place looks like a dump but we have been going there for years.

You would have to go to Vicky's bakery in Cooper City. NW corner of Palm Ave & Stirling Rd. The best guava pastries ever!! Enjoy some expresso, have a Media Noche, maybe a few croquetas. And be ready to walk everything off for the next week.
If you go to the outside walk-up at Jaxson's, (NW corner of US-1 and Stirling Rd, Hollywood) You can get an ice cream cone that won't set you back too much. And again, you'll have to walk it off
And you must not miss Tom Jenkins BBQ....delicious, 1236 S. Federal Hwy.....again you'll have to walk it off. Expect to gain a lot of weight

I'm not sure what the local culture is since South Florida is every culture imaginable. That said, one of my favorite inexpensive and delicious places to eat is Surf Road Tacos in Hallandale. The owners are from California and make a mean Baja style fish taco.
So Cal/Mexican seems just as likely to represent the local culture as any other cuisine.
