I want to buy half a fully cooked (city) ham for Christmas. I don't want to get it too early but I don't want to go too late and not be able to find one that's the right size!

For how long can I safely store a half-ham, still in the package before actually cooking (heating) it for Christmas day dinner? I don't want to freeze it and I do anticipate having lots of leftovers to deal with after.

Vacuum sealed ones you can purchase now and refrigerate and it will be fine.

Ham lasts forever, especially unopened.

Yes, since it is cured usually with a lot of salt it will keep much longer than normal. If it stays sealed and is kept at a low temperature it should easily keep till the date on the package and probably much longer.

If you keep your fridge at 40 or below your good to go up until Xmas.

WAT? You don't have a thermometer in the fridge?

Well if you do

Also you could toss it in the freezer for a few days and take it out on Monday stick it fridge and it will be thawed by Thurs.

Haha - not only do I have a thermometer, I keep it at 34 so my milk and everything else lasts longer. I did think that it being vacuum sealed should help it keep longer than a few days - even unopened lunch meat is good for a week a least? I would rather not freeze if I can avoid it.

Buy it now, it will be fine until Christmas because the Hams are smoked and fully cooked and vacuumed sealed.
