I'm a single guy in my late 20's. The job has nothing to do with the University and for Gainesville the pay looks really good. This is a town where there is practically no industry outside of UF, the hospitals, and retail.

My main concern is the criticism I've heard about Gainesville being a great town if you are young and going to UF or if you are married and wanting to raise a family. But it sucks for singles when you are out of the University age bracket and want to do something other than get drunk every weekend. I'm also not crazy about UF being the sole focus of everything.

What do you think?

I think everything you say is true. Gainesville is really a college town, and you will probably get VERY bored of the student's antics after about...five minutes.

I went there as a student and it was great. My wife and I will be moving back there and starting a family shortly after next year. She works in the medical field so we'll be able to move even if I don't find a job luckily. I personally wouldn't live there if I was single and didn't know anyone there. We are moving since we both went to UF, have friends there, close to family.

That being said 55k is pretty good for Gainesville. If you are renting you could live pretty nice. If you were to buy property tax is very high and home values seem to be coming down still but to me it's pretty high considering wages in Gainesville.

Option #1: Take the job, learn to be a Gator fan & have fun.
Option #2: Take the job, escape to the beach on weekends.
Option #3: Whine or move elsewhere.
