What keeps GAINESVILLE from getting it's own City-Data category?

Just curious. Not many people post about Gainesville? Not big enough? How does Ocala get a forum, which I believe is smaller? Is there more interest in Ocala?

Is there a region for would encompass both Gainesville & Ocala; or are they just different from each other, that they can't be considered the same region?

What's the story on Gainesville, Florida and City-Data representation? Just curious.

Maybe because there are already 15 subforums for Florida, which is more than any other forum on this website.

Also maybe because you don't see many threads started by people asking about Gainesville, so while the city itself popular, interest here in talking about it is not.

Exactly. I live in Gainesville and I give advice when I see someone asking a question. Sometimes they’ll post in the Ocala sub, and sometimes in the main general Florida section.

But not a lot of people ask about the area. It’s a bit surprising, because there’s been so much growth lately. To be honest, you can say that about practically the whole state.

But for the University presence, nobody would care about Gainesville. People try to act like there are other diversifications that have happened, but they are minor-impact at best, and if the University was gone, so would much of the town’s notability.

This. It is still widely viewed as... UF with a town around it.

I attended undergrad in Tallahassee and if not for it being the state capital, it too would be viewed through this lens.

If not for optical machinations, Gainesville would have traded places with Lake City as home to UF. Interesting history lesson here (article written in 2005).

I think it would be useful to rename the Ocala sub-forum to North Central Florida to encompass The Villages, Ocala & Gainesville

I do know that whenever I ask for recommendations for a good doctor near the Villages, Specialty Doctors from Gainesville always come up.

Potential questions about Gainesville tend to be via a younger demographic more likely to post on Reddit than City-Data.
