Gainesville resident report: the city has been seen as an affordable option with a lower cost of living compared to South Florida, especially, but new home construction has grown substantially and yet wages have not kept up. Car and homeowners insurance also has gone up. If you have highly desirable skills or a sought-after degree, you just may find that you can make more, and afford more, elsewhere.

Also, some being priced out of the area, moving to Alabama or other parts of the South.

For us, it’s still been a good move. But for others, not as much.

Florida ranks very high on this list (& most other "best of" lists) despite posters here on C-D claiming:

-Florida's sinking into the Sea

-Population density is at "extreme capacity"

-Insurance rates increasing 40%-50%

-Real estate prices about to collapse

-Red Tide

-Low wages

-No good jobs

-Skyrocketing rents

-Sinkholes

-Hurricanes

-Bad schools

And, a myriad of other claims that hasn't changed 1 thing. They keep coming to Florida in record numbers.

I wonder what the next Florida bashing thread will be titled? ..."Utopia tops Florida for 3rd year in a row for xyz"

Also, less traffic in Alabama too and cheaper!

In Alabama, Orange Beach and Fair Hope are very nice...not sure about the job markets there though. I heard Birmingham's filling up, so there must be a lot of decent jobs there.

Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville seem to be the best destinations for career seekers. If you are in the financial sector, then Miami. There are hospitality jobs everywhere, but most don't pay much.

Owning a business is the best way to thrive in Florida imho.
