I stand by my previous statement.

When you really start to think about it, you must realize that Florida is just a big marsh land developed with fill and rebar plus the beaches are fill as well. Nothing like watching them drop sand to fill the beach on Siesta Key during hurricane season...think about that ~

No, the beaches are not "fill." They are barrier islands, and barrier islands naturally shift shapes due to tidal action. The sand drops are done to prevent overly drastic shifts in form and elevation that would otherwise cause massive damage to building infrastructure humans have built over the years. See Captiva/Sanibel -- the beaches are entirely natural. A hurricane came and shifted things all over the place.

Quote: "Barrier islands are dynamic systems in a delicate balance. The sand on cana's beach is constantly moving, being eroded and then replenished. In summer, ocean waters are calmer and sand is deposited on the beach, at times several feet deep. In the winter, seas are rougher and beach sand is carried offshore. In addition to this east and west pattern, sand migrates north-south along the coast. The general pattern in Florida is southward, although at CANA there are cells where movement is northward. Man-made structures often upset this natural system of replenishment. In the 1980's a rock revetment was constructed just north of the park boundary to protect houses built on the dune. This may alter normal flow of sand southward to CANA and cause erosion along the park's beach. Studies have revealed a change in nearshore currents, but no significant erosion to date.

The beaches are all natural. The sand you see being dropped at SOME of the beaches is the same sand that nature would otherwise pull away, and push right back in over time, over and over again. Some human intervention is only done in some parts to minimize that back-and-forth process. The beaches would still be there regardless.
If we didn't keep building all sorts of **** on those thin barrier islands, there would be no need to keep trucking in sand. Let nature do its thing.
