Retirees going wild in a video at a Century Village Homeowners meeting. They are fired up about soaring HOA fees, $1,000 per month. The condo association blames the increase on "skyrocketing insurance premiums". Police had to be called in.

My advice is to never purchase a place in a community where you have to pay management or HOA fees to some company that runs the place and owns the land.

Instead, look for a place where the homeowners own the land. That way, they can set up an HOA that acts in THEIR best interest, not what is in the best interests of some "for profit" organization.

With that new condo law that passed, I venture to say we’ll see several similar scenes played out across the state in the coming months.

This is how the Surfside collapse happened—repairs and non-routine maintenance kept getting kicked down the road like the proverbial can, and because no one wanted to face the financial consequences, people lost their lives.

I'm not sure why the condo board is being vilified for the rate increase, this is happening to everyone in FL with homeowners insurance rates doubling or tripling in some instances. Condos budget for routine maintenance, future projects and utilities such as street lights. If they don't stay on top of expenses and overall upkeep the property devalues, or worse. Condo/HOA residents want it all it seems minus the monetary contribution and get all riled/indignant like entitled children when asked to pay their fair share.

Many cities and towns are also hardening their building codes following what happened in Surfside. I know one building in Fort Lauderdale, which was 40 years old, had a 12k per unit requirement to meet new standards. I know Pembroke Pines is an inland suburb but it’s possible they could have new requirements.

That said, many HOA’s are wholly mismanaged and many border on criminal. I don’t know what the case is here though, so I’ll reserve judgment.

Because of what happened at Surfside the state is putting mandatory rules to get things updated by the end of the year. These costs aren't cheap and the condo homeowners in my community have assessments now to cover the costs of the updates.

Everything you said is incorrect.

Homeowners ARE the HOA.

There is no "for profit" organization.

Tell me you never lived in an HOA without telling me you never lived in an HOA. Except perhaps as a renter.

JEEZE. They aren't MISMANAGED, the HOMEOWNERS are the HOA and THEY are irresponsible and vote to NOT FUND the PLACE.

Surfside had no damn reserves!

People have to be stupid to LIVE ON THE OCEAN AND NEVER INSPECT OR MAINTAIN THEIR REBAR.

No doubt that stuff is meaningless to your guys. It means the collapse was THE HOMEOWNERS' FAULT.

You are the one who is revealing how little YOU know about the subject. Some people live in places where they own their homes, but don't own the land that their home sits on. Other people live in places where they own their homes AND own the land that the homes sit on.

When they don't own the land that their home sits on, the land is usually owned by a "for profit" organization which charges rent to the home owners. In either situation, there can be an HOA, but that doesn't change the fact that the "for profit" organization is the one that is making most of the rules, particularly regarding what the home owner is allowed to do or build on the property. And, of course, it is the "for profit" organization that is setting the amount of the rent although in some states there may be limits on the amount/size of the increases that are allowed.

Try to inform yourself about the subject and come back when you have something intelligent to say.

People are weird! They want their HOA and condo fee cover everything from water, garbage, common areas maint, roof, insurance, amenities but they don't want to pay for associated costs.... like HOA or condo association is making up prices!
Did the person who got upset in the article came from another planet where there are many insurance companies to choose from and they all are getting cheaper every year?
