Just so you don't think Tampa is the only hot spot, I looked at temp here today and what they are in Chicago (where I moved from). The temp is actually warmer in Chicago, the "feels like" is about 6 degrees difference, so not too much. Looks like a nice cool off tomorrow in Chicago though.

A lot of people have little clue as to what weather is like elsewhere.

Not so amazing now with the algae from the Lake O releases.

Unfortunately with the rents skyrocketing like they have been for awhile it is not easy to save money to move. Fortunately I am finally coming to grips with the heat. I don't love it here but it's better than a lot of other places.

Hubbie and I will be retiring and are thinking of Florida, but I keep hearing about the high COL, high housing, High food costs, and even higher car and homeowners insurance.

We can't make a mistake in moving. All help/ info is welcome.
We moved here to Cape Coral last August. My husband loves it but I hate it with a passion and would like to move to North Carolina.
Shortly after moving here he was diagnosed with cancer, the medical care in SW FL is lacking and during snowbird season can take weeks to get an appointment with an actual doctor. I now drive 135 miles one way to take him to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa.

If you are looking at an area were there is a huge influx of snow birds, you may want to look at how that will work with medical care if you need it.

For me, summers are unbearable, no change of season, too much traffic, especially in winter.

But that said, my husband loves it here.
Also coming from the North East, I don't find the COL high at all, taxes much lower so those are pluses.

We don't live a "big" lifestyle. We don't travel, we don't have cable TV, no cell phones (tho we do have 2 pay as u go trac phones for emergencies- esp with old cars), our cars are 10 and 15 yrs old, etc. The only thing I don't skimp on is food- tho again I don't buy lobster tails or anything like that. We have special diets and/ or food allergies. I need to be gluten free.

We also have dogs on special diets due to allergies- 1 gets monthly allergy shots that I do- and 2 take thyroid medication, all of them take vitamin supplements. We do like to "do things"- free is best, and maybe go out to eat a few times a month. We save and roll our coins sometimes to do that.

We only want a small- and cheap- house in a good area- 800 to 1000sf. I don't want a mortgage, no CDD, HOA, or gated community.

Yes we are liberal, but have some very conservative friends here in NY. We laugh at each other but we are very good friends. We are friendly ppl and make friends with anyone as long as YOU are willing.

The reason we are moving is for health- doctor recommended a better climate- can't take the cold any more.
On that budget if being close to the beach isn't important to you I would look in the Ocala area. I don't think that area gets tons of snowbirds like the coasts do either.
