Staying fit is about self-motivation, not where you live. Florida has no advantage over any other state ...

These states are relatively homogeneous with fairly high rates of income/employment/education. It's no surprise they're healthy, but the climate still works against that.

No, the climate does not work against it. The cities in those states often have a good network of trails, bicycle paths, and bicycle lanes on roads. They also have a large amount of conservation land and forested areas for recreation. Snow and cold only stop people that make excuses about not purchasing proper gear to deal with the elements. I would argue that the lower Midwest and upper South has worse Winter conditions due to the ice possibilities and constant freeze/thaw cycles during the day.

You hear a lot of folks on here whine about the time it takes to put on the extra clothes in the cold climates where they moved from. These people obviously aren't going to be out exercising. Maybe sitting on the beach somewhere, but doing as little as possible.

It's been snowing off and on here today and the walking/biking trails at the local Central Park are snow covered and slick. Even if you were to get out, it's somewhat hazardous. There are constant winds, the temperature is about ten, with straight line winds and blowing snow. I would need very, very heavy winter gear to remain comfortable outside in this. Saturday is the only day in the ten day forecast that we'll get reliably above freezing.

I'm sure that it's going to be more convenient to get out and exercise anywhere in Florida over this mess we're dealing with.

Uh no ... doesn't matter what climate you're in with the availability of indoor gyms/pools, hockey rinks, basketball courts, racquet sports, etc.

We don't have much ice in the upper Midwest in Winter, mostly all snow- roads are cleared very fast. I much prefer snowshoeing on trails, good way to get exercise in Winter. I have extensive nordic trails experience in northern Wisconsin and New Hampshire.

Florida has a large population of obese people. States up north/in the midwest have healthier people. In a way, Florida's humidity provides an excuse for people to not get out there and exercise.

That is true, the South has a higher level of obesity in general than any other part of the country but it has little to do with the weather, its lack of education of nutrition, higher poverty levels and things like that. Hot and humid weather can be great to train for a football player, hence why the SEC players tend to be a better shape than other parts of the country.
