If I would have to guess. Doesn't it have to do with Gottschalks have more wamer season clothes since they are a chain started in California, and Macy's is more colder season clothes since they started in New York.
Differences?
1)Gottschalks: warmer season clothes; Macy's: colder season clothes
2)Macy's: more expensive clothes, but more sales; Gottschalks: cheaper clothes, but less sales
3)Macy's has bigger stores; Gottschalks has smaller stores
4)For ladies, the brand names differ.
And the most noted difference is most people know about Macy's. And very few have heard about Gottschalks.
So, if you want to get a giftcard for some one. It's best to get a Macy's one since everyone knows Macy's.
I have shopped Macy's when visiting other cities and didn't find sales at those particular times. We only have Gottschalks here and they have awesome sales. So I dunno.
What was the reason the topic again? Just comparing the two?

Macy's (at least out here) is much more upscale than Gottschalk's. Gottschalk's is more comparable to Kohls or Mervyns and caries more casual clothes. Macy's annoyed me when they changed the name of the local chain (which, granted, they'd owned for years) to the national Macy's brand. I don't care about the Macy's name and I did care about the Meier Frank name, which had history in Oregon.

Hmm, that's what my second idea was. Okay, out of all these. If you could please rate them from highest to lowest, 1 being the highest, by which is most expensive and upscale.
the city - Nice list. I think that consolidation ruined the retail industry. I used to love Buffum's and even Bullock's. Barney's still has nice stuff. Nordstrom (IMO) seems to focus on a lot of it's own brands. Your top two choices are correct. I can't really say that I shop at any of the others on your list.

Can't. We don't have Neiman Marcus (although I know what it is), Bloomingdale's, Dillards or Loehmans. And, frankly, I don't shop at upscale chain department stores. No point in it. Why spend $500 on a sweater that's not really any higher quality and STILL looks like everyone else in the country? Of that list, I go into Nordies (which we consider "local") for shoes sometimes and don't shop at the rest.
I can't rank stores, there are so many in my area. I advise everyone to watch sales - I've gotten some steals at Macy's, as well as Marshall's, Ross, TJMaxx (if you only shop these 3 off-price stores, I highly advise Ross, much less than the other two). I also sometimes find the brands that are sold at Macy's, etc. (Charter Club is Macy's brand for example) at the off-price stores.
Sorry, off topic - never heard of the Gottshalks either.
