I normally go to Great Clips or the like (and I'm a guy) so please forgive my ignorance. I'm used to going in and telling them how much to take off and then they do it.
Thought I would go to a "higher end" hair salon and get recommendations for a new hairstyle. Not quite sure what I want, but thought I would try something completely different than my currently bland hairstyle. Looking to get some suggestions from a professional on what options would look good on me.
Is this something I could expect at this type of place? Looking at a local salon, there are different options for haircuts that are ranked from designer to senior creative director. A senior creative director is about $20 more than a designer. Is there an advantage to going to a creative director over a designer when it comes to recommendations? Or would that be overkill for a guy and I should just go to the designer?
creative director will be more experienced and can suggest trying new style, but not necessarily better at cutting hair.
I wont waste my money
Yeah a creative director might be a bit much. A senior designer could be a happy medium, enough experience and knowledge to give good advice but at a reduced cost.
I went to another higher end salon awhile back as a walk in, but the stylist didn't really have any ideas and I just ended up with the same old cut.
My hubbie is very particular about his cut so when we moved to new state he brought a photo of himself with one of his best previous cuts, new hairdresser (no title) matched it very very well, not expensive salon.
Maybe OP you could find a photo of someone with similar face/hair you like online to print and take in. If lucky you'll be done in one.

That's a good option if you know what you want. Not sure that I trust my own instincts as far as fashion/style/hair goes but it's a good starting point.

So tired of trying to find a good hairstylist that I recently gave up and bought a self hair cut kit by Wahl. I will be cutting my own hair for sure. You can't count on a consistent good hair cut even if you bring a photo and directions. I think a lot of stylist go thru the motions after a while and tune you out. Happens to everyone out there after a while.
I did cut my hair during covid with a mustache trimmer and it took forever and I did a fairly good job, about the same as a hair stylist to be honest. But man was it time consuming. I think with my new hair cut kit the time will be cut drastically, the only hard part is the front, as you are suppose to use scissors. I never did the front with scissors, I used the same trimmer everywhere.

Going to watch some youtube videos on this.
I tried cutting my own hair during Covid with one of those kits and it didn't turn out well at all. The side and back turned out okay enough, but blending the top with the sides not so well.
It works for basic haircuts, buzz cuts, etc. I was thinking of trying something different with my hair....spiking it or a messy hairdo or the like. Something like this maybe:
I know what you mean about finding a good stylist. I tend to jump from store to store and stylist to stylist. At the one high end place I tried awhile back, I tried to get some advice but even she would rather I tell her what I wanted rather than give me any ideas, feedback, etc.
That is a very hard haircut to achieve. I have tried something similar, those Japanese unisex haircut and its certainly takes the best of the best to cut it right. Those haircuts take very frequent cuts to maintain. Most guys don't have thick enough hair to pull it off.
FWIW, I tried the Wahl self hair cut kit for the 1st time today, just now, still takes forever. The front is devilish hard to cut, I have a very basic cut and I think the secret as least for me is to not cut you bangs too short as it can cover some mistakes.
Call up the salon and ask for the creative director, or even stop by in person.
Tell them you're thinking of a major change, and ask if perhaps you could speak to someone for a few minutes about it, and ask politely if the creative director himself/herself is the best person, of if they recommend the designer. A good salon won't mind talking to you.

Interesting.... I didn't realize that could be so difficult.

You'll save yourself quite a bit of money once you master it.
