Not Greek, but I lived in Greece for about four years around 20 years ago. Someone whom I trust told me back then to leave the country after the 2004 Olympics; things seemed to be okay for a few years after that, but the SHTF with the debt crisis in 2010. So … and I don’t see Greece recovering - whatever that could mean - in my lifetime.
I still have a Greek driver’s license, can speak and understand a smattering of modern Greek, I can read some Attic Greek, and read some Hellenistic koine Greek more or less fluently.
I visited briefly in 2014. Currently no desire to return, not even a visit, though if I were to go back across the Atlantic, it would be to Greece or Portugal, not Italy or Spain or anywhere in Europe.
I know this doesn’t help much. Why do you ask? What’s going on in Greece that matters to you?
My wife is Greek, so "I am Greek by marriage." My kids are Greek too, as my daughter put it she wants a shirt that is 1/2 the Greek the flag, and the other side says "shame." So, yeah, they ID with mommy's culture, not mine.
