Canada is a never ending source of amazement for Canadians.

(That said, Canada really is lovely.)

British Columbia is very "liveable" (strictly talking about the weather), it's just that there aren't many big cities outside of Vancouver.

Interesting reactions on this thread.

He posted a map and got criticized and assumptions made of his intent.

I know from my personal experiences with Europeans form France, the U.K. Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Greece, Austria, Switzerland and Spain, that I met in EVERY country people who had no concept on how big Canada is.

Forums can be used to educate, so I don' get the snide remarks.

Heck even a friend from The Netherlands thought Vancouver would be at most an hours drive from Toronto. Guess what? I showed him a map.

You can't just superimpose two maps projected on planar surfaces over each other. There's a lot of spatial distortion that goes unaccounted for.

People need to chill out with the snarky comments in here. I think the OP was just trying to provide some perspective - I don't think he was trying to be a peacock at all. These forums are about light discussion and hopefully learning a thing or two, even if its simple stuff. Not everything has to be a profound discussion.

Planar surfaces maps do contort, but if both maps are using the same method, isn't it a wash?

Not really. The closer that features are to the poles on planar maps, the more distorted they are. While both North America and Europe are northerly continents, their planar projections aren't necessarily equal in distortion when they're compared together - because they're not the same shape and size with the exact same latitude boundaries. You can't just move Canada eastwards across the map and say it's more or less equally scaled because they are both more or less 'North' within the same map. It would be better to do this again as though they were superimposed on a globe.

If Canada were to be any worth, it would be American by now.
