And surely trimming it's costly and meddlesome middle managers (of which there are plenty at UPS). It's not a 'fun' place to work. Quite similar to being in the military and always under a very scrupulous watchful eye.
When working for UPS.... You WORK!
It's one of the ironies of the workforce that the most basic and straight forward jobs tend to have the most direct and intense supervision while the complex and difficult ones tend to be worked with very little supervision and solely based on evaluation of outcomes.
I of course understand the reasoning here. If you work a simple job they assume you're a simple person whose hands need to be held, if you work a complex job they trust you to 'figure it out' on your own. Of course in reality it doesn't always work out like that.
Good point. But I question the extent to which non-Amazon sales have declined. There are so many online catalogs, many of which have far better prices than Amazon for the same or equivalent items, that people are still buying. And those companies use UPS. Maybe drivers aren't the staffers that are being cut. Maybe UPS is streamlining its office operations.
Yeah, hearing about a number of big companies announcing layoffs across a number of industries, not just tech.
Looks like the effects of interest rate increases and QT are finally kicking in...

UPS has some significant cost pressures.
1) new labor contract for drivers
2) replacement vehicle cost and availability
3) large increases in fleet maintenance costs (especially insurance)
4) fuel
5) generational retirement impact (many are reaching that age...) Pensions + HC + replacement costs. hiring, training, bring up to efficiency. Hiring today is a huge burden, as the education and responsibility levels are far less, longevity of employment has declined, much more work efficiency is required.... And no one really wants to work, especially a physically demanding job.
This is the clearest sign that the economy is in a recession or stalling. When shipping companies start to reduce workforce then it means that less goods are being sold. UPS is the one area where you can't really increase productivity much without hiring more delivery drivers. It's not like tech or retail work that can be replaced with automation.
The corporations are selling a line of BS. For fiscal year 2023 UPS recorded a PROFIT of 6.7 BILLION dollars after a record profit set in 2022 of 11.5 billion due to hiking shipping costs. This isn't about loss here, just pure unadulterated greed. Americans need to revitalize our unions again if we hope to save the middle class.

Now, is a perfect time to trim the 10-20% of typical workforce who are not performing.
Early in the year = easier to plan / deal with severance pay
Many open positions = easier to find a new job
Less carrying costs for company/ insurance/ benefits/ (especially earned vacation).
Companies have been sitting out Covid and extensions / incentives / restrictions - time to get back to business.
