Amazon can afford to lose money on those orders. A local cafe cannot.
Then why even bother offering those items and services? Just do the business that makes money.
There are other examples of these loss leaders like Costco with its rotisserie chicken. Costco actually loses money on these chickens that everyone raves about. But Costco uses this chicken as bait. It draws customers into the store, and then get blasted with product placements as they walk to the chicken counter.
With online, its too easy for the members to just exit out of the page, skipping all the ads. Go to a brick and mortar is more commitment, and will be much more enticing to stock on purchases to save yourself a trip. You dont get that with e-commerce.
They all use chicken which is close to expiration date or on expiration date,if they dont sell it,they would have to trash it.
Buying those chicken wholesale cost less than $3 each,could be less,so they are not losing money,of course they have to cook them first .
