I want to go watch a regular dog show since I just like dogs and I want to add a toy dog to my pack I have pretty much concluded that watching "working dogs" is not our bag. My sister went to one GSD show with her dog and she said everybody was friendly and the dogs were allowed to kind of meet etc. Was she right? I don't want to compete I just want to bring my dog to spectate Thanks!

I come from a horse show background so I am very familar with all the unwritten rules of conduct at various types of competions

Shows that I have attended haven't allowed any dogs on the premises that were not official participants or part of an adoption booth sponsored by an affiliated rescue.

That would be true at a sanctioned event, AKC or some other organization.
There are "Fun Matches" that would likely not object to an un-entered dog 'spectating'.
There may be obeidence classes in your area that the instructor might know of any upcoming fun matches.

If you want to have more fun go to an ARBA or an IABCA show. These shows are more fun for the dogs and for the humans than the AKC shows. You can find them at www.arba.org and at www.iabca.com

The AKC shows are too "stuffy," formal and intimidating. The ARBA and IABCA show have a lot of people just having fun and loving their dogs. Take you dog with you. Just keep him/her on a leash with a good harness. Don't take your dog if its a female in heat though.

No doggie spectators allowed at any dog show we have attended or participated in.

Added: Many local dog clubs hold "fun"shows....you should check out one of those...either to watch or to participate.

NO dog visitors at any dogs shows I've every been to, either.

I do like going, however. Take a look at Home Page, InfoDog -* The Dog Fancier's Complete Resource for information* AKC Dog Show Events, and Dog Products and Services for a show near you.

AKC rules state that no unentered dogs are allowed on the show grounds. You can however go and spectate and learn about different breeds that interest you. This kind of show would be considered a benched show. You can go to unbenched shows and talk with handlers/breeders as well but may not get as much info. You can check for shows on www.infodog.com
