I take my lab pup for a walk just about every morning. He is still young and overly excited about everything. Anyways, while going down a small sidewalk path we were coming up to a lady and her boxer walking towards us. All of the sudden my dog got all excited and the metal part on his collar broke! He took off after them and I freaked out!

Luckily the lady was like 'it's okay he is friendly', but I felt guilty Even though our dog is only 5-6 months old I would be scared if someone's dog broke off it's leash and came running at me and my dog. I am just glad that the other dog was nice.. and my dog is nice and just wants to make friends.. but if they would have started fighting I don't know what I would do. I was scared

Stuff happens. Luckily, 99.9% of the time, nothing bad would happen. I'd be more worried about him running into the street. Sounds like it is time for obedience training. I'm starting tonight with one of my boys, he is 6 months. He is a bolter, I can't trust him off leash at all except in the backyard. My other 7 month old dog doesn't run off like that, he stays nearby and listens fairly well.

Very happy for you that nothing bad happened. I would have had heart failure if it happened to me!

I'm glad your puppy was ok - that can be scary and it's one of my biggest nightmares. We constantly work on recall - it's the one command that can literally save your dogs life.

Walk him with this! All my dogs have one. I just leave their leashes attached to it and slip it over their heads whenever we go out anywear. Their regular collar stays on all the time too. This one is only sold at Petsmart and is usually on the wall where all the black collars and leashes are. It is sometimes hard to find, they are mixed in. This collar should be a must when any dog leaves the house. They are safe and secure and cannot slip away. Before putting it on, adjust it like their regular collar so it fits nice and snug! They come in two sizes, one is a thick one for big dogs and the smaller is like a half inch thick. I have the smaller one for my 45lb and up dogs.

Those are good collars, I believe they're called Martingale collars, the rescue I volunteer w/ uses mostly that style (smaller dogs generally use harnesses b/c of potential trachea problems). Thx for posting the photos -

I love those collars and they are sooo hard to find, I can find the ones that are part chain but I don't like those the full nylon ones are non-existant where I'm at and I've even google for them.

Maybe I will have to look for one of those collars. And luckily we weren't near a road for him to run out in.. it was sort of an open grass field with sidewalk going down it that is in between houses (just a big tract).

Petco tends to carry the martingale collar like the one in the photo.

Blondie has good advice; martingale collars are great! Premier makes martingale collars as do many custom collar makers. If you google "martingale collar" you'll get lots of hits. I use them on all of my dogs. Here's a link on how to properly measure and fit one. Around the Hounds - Sizing Info (http://www.aroundthehounds.com/c237432.2.html - broken link)
