I told my friend I'd ask this here for her, she's not on C-D. She has a 7 year old male Shih Tzu with high calcium and excessive thirst. He does not have diabetes, cushing or thyroid problems. She wants to know if any of this sounds familiar and what type of specialty vet she should see for him. The vet that did the tests will probably give her info but until then does anyone have any ideas? I'm not a dog owner so I can't help her. Thanks in advance for any replies!

It's a Shih Tzu

According to AI
Hypercalcemia can have many causes, including:
Cancer
Certain infections
Medications
Ingestion of certain plants
Hyperparathyroidism
Hyperadrenocorticism (Addison's disease)
Bone disease
Fungal infection
Dehydration
Azotemia (accumulation of nitrogenous waste products in the blood)

Also consider this:

Another possibility - dehydration. Total calcium can be falsely increased by diet and dehydration, making it an unreliable test in some situations. Nutritional deficiencies and renal disease are other common causes of hypercalcemia in dogs.

Typical diagnostic labs include: complete blood count, biochemistry panel, ionized calcium test, and urinalysis.
