My dog is pooping while sleeping, and I don't understand why he's doing it. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know how to address this issue?

Thank you

Do you mean literally while he is sleeping, or do you mean while he's stuck in a crate for the night?

Not enough background about the kind of dog, condition, age, outside time and health.

Our dog started doing this when she got very old.

I think the reasons might have been twofold, some loss of control, but also hip pain from arthritis that made her unstable and awkward trying to do it standing.

We had a GSD mix that started doing this as she approached her senior years. I can't remember the scientific name but it was a degenerative disorder that affected the disks in the back which put pressure on the nerve that helps a dog control bowel movements. The disorder eventually progressed to the point where it caused stiffness and she had difficulty getting up, but she still had good mobility and lived a long life. We had to put her down at 14 due to a different, unrelated health problem.

Has he ever had a seizure? My dog used to poop while he was having one. Sometimes it was in the middle of the night. Thankfully, he stopped having them.

When my big dog got old he would sometimes poop while sleeping or walking. It wasn’t his fault and we just lived with it until he died.

Thank you
Have you had him examined by a vet for a cause? Regardless of the cause, there are "doggie diapers" to help contain the mess. My neighbor used them for her elderly dog when he lost the use of his back legs.
