You can say the same thing about just about every critter given the right circumstances...including that cute fluffy little lab puppy digging in your flowerbeds.

Who’d a thought a dog could even get through the armor?

Getting through the armor! Yeah, that would surprise me, too! We used to see them all the time in the Florida woods, when I was a kid. There's no woods in our old neighborhood now - all houses. I don't recall ever thinking them particularly ugly. Now, possums are ugly. But I love possums for their natural role.
Speaking of critters being inconvenient, and generating hate? Would you ever think critters as beautiful, in their way, as beavers and porcupines could generate hate? But both can be extremely destructive, in their own way. My grandfather was a man of the woods and trees. Knew them, loved them. Hated porkies and beavers. Porcupines because they could, and would, be destructive to houses and buildings - digging under and gnawing on lumber foundations and frames. Beavers because their dams can be destructive to woodlands (converting them to wetlands).
And skunks? Gorgeous critters! But under all that cute fur? Well, you know! BTW, skunks can be destructive as well. But they are also beneficial in the balance of things.
