With all the recalls that happen, I'm becoming more inclined to make more meals and snacks for my dogs from scratch.

Does anyone have any tried-and-true recipes for dog food and treats? Allergies are not a concern.

Treats? I make pork loin jerky, no salt, no seasonings, for my dogs and they love it.

Biscuits? Mix whole wheat flour with just enough water to make a stiff dough. Knead it a bit to develop the gluten. Pat it down onto a layer of dough on a cookie sheet lined with a silicone mat. Bake 350 degrees until all the stickiness is cooked and take it out of the oven and cut it into bars. Place it back into the oven at 300 degrees and bake it until it is rock hard, so hard you could build a brick house out of it..

My dogs love the whole wheat biscuits and it gives them a hard chew. Thickness and size of the bars depends upon the size of your dog.

Dog food? No recipe. I cook 20 pounds of meat, 2 quarts of dry measure brown rice, assorted veggies into dog food and serve with a Vitamin C pill, a fish oil capsule, and a scoop of bonemeal powder. Then the dogs get a bite or two of fruit during the day.

I vary the type of meat and the grain can also be varied.

Or buy a copy of home prepared dog and cat diets the healthful alternative written by Donald Strombeck. He's a vet professor who specializes in animal nutrition, not some sort of fad diet guru.

I save my venison livers and slow cook them outside until semi dry then cut into small bits and vac seal them for training treats. I also save the offal from hogs, game and scraps too. That gets mixed into kibble.

I have 4 dogs and 20lbs is nothing. That’s 3 days or so.

That lasts one week, minus a little bit. I feed three pounds of meat a day.

^^Right. When I was able to feed raw, that's a bit more than I used per week. Per day: 1.5 lbs for one dog and 1 pound for the other - per day. (17 lbs per week)

The dog food thing reminded me of a phone conversation my wife had with her cousin.

About a year ago my wife was talking to her cousin who is a traveling nurse in the Arctic area of Canada.
Any way during the conversation the cousin says hey wait a second I have to toss my dogs some salmon.
My wife says Salmon?
Cousin says yeah what else are they gonna eat?
