Here in the south, Sago Palms are very common. I just read this scary article in the local paper, and am passing it on. I don’t have any in my yard, but if I did, I’d be removing it. It’s poisonous to cats also.

Very important. There a lot of Sago Palms in AZ where I used to live. I moved to a place where there were Sago Palms, and I had to hustle to keep my dogs away. Something about them makes dogs want to chew on them. Really scary.

A good reminder Gentlearts...thanks.

I came upon this same info several years ago when I caught on of my dogs munching on one. Had 2 in large pots...they bit the dust and haven't had another since...I always have dogs.

Interesting. I spent a lot of my growing up years in coastal Florida, and had never heard of Sago palms! Wikipedia entry is pretty short, but I'll guess they are not native, but introduced, as ornamentals? Yeah, I think I'd be getting rid of them if I had any!

I just bought two and planted them in my backyard.

Then found out they are poisonous!

They are in pots now. My dogs are little and generally don't bother the plants...we'll see how it goes. They could be moved to the front yard.

I'm thinking of sticking with hibiscus. LOL

Yes, when I found out my sago palm was poisonous, I put it in a pot and up on a ledge on my patio, out of reach of the dogs (mine are big).

When I had my yard redone, the architect asked me what variety of palm trees I wanted. This was before I had a dog, and before I knew that Sago's are toxic to dogs (and cats.) Luckily, I requested "Robellini" variety, so that's what I have. It was just pure dumb luck that I didn't have sago's planted.
