I would try to bury it in your dog's main meal and if he/she's like mine, your dog will inadvertently swallow it while quickly gulping down the food. Failing that, I would try tp coat it, then wrap it in a bite-size portion of some favorite foods and give it as you would a reward treat.

I smear mine in peanut butter then wrap a small amount of soft bread around it. My dog swallows the whole thing so quickly there's no chance for him to taste the pill.

Sometimes if the pill is large, he somehow manages to eat the goodies portion then spit out the pill only (smart dog, lol), in which case I try again, except this time preface it with a small amount of the food only portion to get his food-wolfing reflex going, give him the disguised pill, then quickly "chase" it with another small portion of the food. The quick succession minimizes any chance of isolating the pill portion.

Good luck. I hate taking pills too.

Wow -- many more great suggestions. I did manage to get her to take them today by burying each one in a small "ball" of vanilla ice cream.

However, with her, buying it in her main food (wet or dry) doesn't work, she will either eat around it or spit it out. If it wasn't so worrying, it would actually be funny.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!

Haha, mine usually does that too. One time he even managed to isolate a tiny piece of lettuce from his pile of food. As usual, he polished off his meal in record time, leaving a perfectly clean, shiny, food bowl - except for that small, single piece of lettuce. LOL

I've had much more success with burying his pill as a treat using the hand-fed sequential chaser method. It helps that he is a food-orientated Lab trapped inside a toy breed's body.

This reminds me of our dog when I was growing up. Someone gave him some leftover tuna salad, which he scarfed down, carefully leaving at least a dozen immaculately clean bits of chopped up celery in his dish.

I'd try American cheese. Put the pill in it and roll it up in the cheese so it forms a ball. Have a second piece of cheese ready. Give him the first piece of cheese with the pill in it. Immediately give him the second piece of cheese. The trick is to get him to swallow the first piece with the pill fast so he can get the second piece.

Alternatively, you could try hiding it in a little wet cat food (the pate kind). Dogs usually love cat food.

Just an update:

After examining her, our vet thinks the limp is due to an arthritis flare-up, but he prescribed Vetprofen in addition to the Tramadol that she we gave to her. (But at least she "tolerates" the Vetrprofen better than the Tramadol.) We are also going to try Omega 3 to help the arthritis in addition to the Dasuquin she takes every morning already.
