I have used Costco's canned dog food for years with one of my dogs, he never had an issue, he passed away last year. I can't remember if the cans come in different flavors/consistencies. Now we have Kirkland Nature's Domain Turkey & Pea Stew. A few months ago it caused problems with 2 dogs I was boarding - gave them diarrhea. I don't feed it to my dog but I gave her some over the weekend, and she was farting the whole next day. So I'm ready to trash it. I just wonder what the heck is in it, causing this.
I stopped using it ages ago because the quality has declined rapidly. Very little meat chunks, mostly gravy and yes, one of my dogs got the "runs" although at the time I didn't associate it with the food, because the other dog was fine.
It's got very low ratings on the Canadian site and one reviewer claimed that turkey was a stool softening food and did some research <quote> From Google: Gastrointestinal distress is also a side effect of turkey consumption for our dogs. It is not uncommon for dogs who ingest turkey to suffer with diarrhea, cramps, and vomiting.. Several other reviewers also stated their dogs got diarrhea also.
I wouldn't throw it out though. Take it back for a refund.
Switching your dog's food abruptly can cause gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, diarrhea, and a decreased appetite. Any time you decide to change your dog's food, you should transition to the new diet gradually in order to give your dog's system time to adjust to the change. If the two dogs that you are boarding are not used to eating that food it could be what’s causing them issues.
It was guest dogs and some dogs don't deal well with a change in diet.
I don't feed that food so know nothing about it, but if you are unhappy, take it back to Costco and they will give you a refund.
I deliberately feed my dogs a wide range of different foods, specifically so that their systems have no problems ever with new foods. But some people feed their dogs the same thing and never anything else, and those dogs can sometimes have a reaction to foods that are quite different from what they are accustomed to. It does not necessarily mean the food is bad.
Adding, I think it is nonsense that turkey causes digestive problems with dogs. Turkey is good meat. What can cause problems is feeding a huge meal of the fatty turkey skin to dogs who are not accustomed to a high fat diet. That can actually make a dog quite sick.
Don't make big abrupt changes in the fat level of your dog's diet. Doing so is just asking for trouble. If you want to make big increases in fat level, build up to it gradually.

This. A sudden change in food, regardless of quality can upset a dog's gut. Don't forget that dogs in new/strange surroundings (fosters, boarders, visiting) are under some stress. That can also contribute to a touchy gut.
I am blaming the food more than anything else, that is just my feeling on this. We bought the cans way over a year ago so I'm pretty sure it's not returnable.

Agreed. And unless the dogs are locked in a kennel all day and night, there's all manner of things they can get into to cause problems.
