Hello,
Our new rescue was dx with heartworm. It’s likely she has had it for several years when she was in a different part of the country and she was never tested. The Vet told us this as she has the immature worms in her bloodstream and tested positive for mature worms in her heart.
She has no symptoms at all, no significant issues with her heart on heat and all her other labs are normal. She is a schnauzer terrier mix, about 20lbs. We thought she was 6-7 years but now we understand she may be 10.
We started the doxycycline 2 weeks ago and she got her first by mouth heartguard pill a few days ago, staying at the vet for 8 hours with no issues.
She will have her next by mouth heartguard treatment around January 15th. The vet will recheck some things anticipates she can successfully start the injections.
Can anyone please tell me how much activity needs to be restricted? She is a precious little girl, not crazy active but does get excited when she sees new dogs on walks.
She gets along wonderfully with our other 2 rescues but they are all seniors so they don’t normally play or roughhouse.
Can she jump on the bed or the couches? Should we crate her overnight or just when we are not home?
Is it ok to do the aggressive treatment with a 10 year old dog? She has no symptoms at all and has a great chance of recovery....but I have real fears about the dangers of the treatment.
Any feedback and/or personal experiences are greatly appreciated! We have fallen so in love with her and she is a perfect new pack member. We want to do right by her. Thank you!!
I want to know why the rescue you got her from never tested her ? 10 is an older dog would be considered a senior dog if I am correct . You know a lot of people would sue that rescue for the vet bills . Just saying that but so true in some . anyways no exercise you are supposed to keep them calm and subdued and I would get her a crate where she is comfortable , leave the door open and let her come and go as she pleases and take her to the potty and that would be the only exercise she would need . Good luck and hope you have many years with her .
