Hi, I enjoy my Havanese and his long hair, however, I desperately need input on detangling during a bath.
I've bathed him once, myself, and boy oh boy... 'nugh said. So, anyway, hoping for suggestions on
products that will detangle during/after bathing, such as a conditioner? I'm afraid I've gotten myself a bit
confused in the product isle at Petco. Thanks in advance.
Try "The Stuff", I think that is the best. Right now I'm using Tropiclean detangler because the feed store had it on sale, 2 bottles for $10. Cowboy Magic is pretty good too but it is silicone and leaves them feeling slippery. I'm out right now but I usually use Buddy Wash Conditioner after I shampoo. I also really like my teflon coated greyhound comb.
Cowboy Magic Detangler and Shine. Love that stuff. I originally got it for my horses but also use it on my hair. I use a vinegar rinse now and then to cut the silicone buildup and it's been fine. A hair dresser told me that it originally was a human product which was rebadged for animal use. I also use Cowboy Magic Green Spot Remover to freshen my Peke mix between baths. Nope, I don't work for Cowboy Magic - just really like their products.
My wife swears by them and suggests them to her customers often. The main thing is to stay on top of the grooming of your pet. Once you get knots it's too late unless you enjoy torturing your Havanese.
Stop buying at places like Petco. Those products are for pets. Go to a show dog website like 3-Cs dog equipment and buy shampoo and conditioner made for show dogs. Coat care made for show horses also works.
The coat should be completely combed out and free from tangles before bathing. Do not scrub the shampoo in. Instead you gently squeeze the hair to distribute the shampoo. Rinse completely. If you do it right, you won't introduce tangles as you shampoo.
Use a high quality cream rinse.
Buy a high quality metal comb. Make sure the teeth are completely smooth. Any roughness will cut the hair.
Before washing, cowboy magic detangler or WD-40 will make the tangles comb right out. If you use WD-40, it must be washed immediately. The cowboy magic can be left in.
Keep that high quality comb next to your tv chair and comb behind the dog's ears every day. If you do it daily, it will only take a few seconds. The other place that tangles fast is the bend of the back leg.
For my papillons I made my own shampoo but occassionally used White on White. It made the coat sparkling white, but if used too often, it dried the hair out.
Thanks OWS for all that info. I do keep him tangle free, daily... but... I did get pretty freakin' rigorous
when I bathed him... gently squeeze... professional/equestrian products. Got it. Very helpful
indeed.
Thanks, Koale
I agree with that. With human shampoo, pH is wrong and too much coat oil is removed. For dogs, you want a shampoo that'll loosen dirt but not strip too much oil from the coat.
Horse shampoos are safe to use because horses have delicate skin and their special shampoos are mild. Cowboy Magic is good for both horses and dogs.
When I was showing Scottish Deerhounds, bathing was problematic because the coat is suppose to be crisp and most shampoos soften the coat. Getting the dog to the ring, clean and smelling clean, but with the coat still crisp was a challenge.
There are show dog shampoos for different coat types and for different colors and there are shampoos that remove stains without drying the coat.
