Hello!

We adopted a dog named Buddy a few weeks ago from animal services. He is 26 lbs and 5 years old. We were told he is a basset hound/jack Russell terrier mix. Does this look about right?

Same with this beauty. We adopted her this past Saturday and we were told she is a Shepherd/Terrier mix. She is 44 lbs and 4 years old. I definitely see the shepherd in her, but what kind of terrier?

The first one seems more like a Jack Russel and Corgi or Dachshund mix. I don't see any basset hound but you never know, he has the long basset body.

Not sure about the second.

They're both cute pups! Thank you for saving them.

I thought Jack Russell x Corgi immediately as well. They probably said shepherd-terrier mix just because #2 looked small for a shepherd. I don't see any terrier there, but there could be some kind of hunting dog, pointer/hound/heinz57. Both are quite attractive.

There is a DNA test you can do that will give you a pretty decent idea of their breeds.
Wisdom Panel is the name, and the company is Mars.
It's not cheap, maybe $75 each dog if memory serves, but it sure does help with the guessing.

My dogs are rescue mutts too, and I'm really glad we did the tests.
I wish I could have done it for my last dog as well. She was absolutely gorgeous. Cars would stop while we were walking to look at her, but we never knew exactly what she was. But the tests were pretty iffy back then.
They're more reliable now, and the answers we got seemed to fit pretty well.

That Sheppard Terrier mix looks a little like one of my dogs...She is part fox terrier and part Chihuahua and I know what a Chihuahua looks like. Obviously she looks different but she has that stocky build to her chest and front legs...Kind of looks like that dog.

I am no dog expert, but that looks familiar.

The first one definitely looks Jack Russel. Probably crossed with a mongrel with 50 breeds in the pedigree, with one of those breeds being an over-sized pet store brown chihuahua.

The second looks German Shepherd or Malinois cross. But you also get that sort of erect ear athletic look in a Kelpie cross.

Wow!! Her ears do really look like a Kelpie's ears!! She definitely has the shepherd loyalty in her. And the real loud bark when protecting her people. Her build is definitely very similar to a Malinois as well.

Wow!! I was looking at photos of these mixes.... seems the first is very similar to the Jack Russell/Corgi mix and the 2nd one looks like the Australian Kelpie, Belgian Shepherd Malinois mix
