Last weekend, a friend of mine sent me a link on facebook to a rescue group that transports animals from kill shelters to no-kills and to foster homes. They needed a couple of legs filled for a transport run and couldn't find anyone. I've never done anything like this but I signed up. I read all the instructions (man, there's a lot) but in the end, it was just a quiet ride with a beautiful dog and a momma cat with her 4 kittens.
When I was tethering the pup to the back seat, she leaned over and gave me the most gentle lick on the forehead. She then curled up in the pet hammock and slept for the 2 hours I had her in the car. (Usually legs are about 1 hour but I signed up for a double)
It was one of the most rewarding experiences I've had. I've signed up to do it again this coming weekend.
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this here so please correct me if I'm wrong but if you're in the GA, SC, NC, VA area, they're always looking for help.
Several years ago, my best friend and I drove a few hours to meet one of those transports so she could get one of her dogs. It was SOOOO funny to us - we met the volunteer in the minivan who was handing off the animals to the next driver and that driver as well at a vacant lot in the middle of rural Pennsylvania.
Although it was all on the up and up, meeting someone in a vacant gravel lot at a podunk town in the middle of nowhere just sounded sketchy. The whole way out, instead of talking about the dog, we joked about the brick of heroin we were going to pick up.
My own dog came off a transport called GHART that operates out of Oklahoma - they are a little better funded and have a couple of large vans they drive. They work with a bunch of rescue groups. Wonderful people!

LOL .... I transport for a group out of Southern Illinois.... my friend also happens to be the Animal Control Officer for two of the little towns in that area.....
She and I met at a park in a 3rd little Southern Illinois town so I could get my passengers from her.... She in her ACO van, me in my little Soul with Missouri plates... and we caught the eye of the local constabulary who came over to make sure all was on the up and up.... We didn't even notice him until he had walked all the way over to us and he startled us, which in turn startled the already nervous pup we were trying to get in her kennel in my car.... both of us wound up with nips and an apologetic police officer....
I can only IMAGINE what handoffs look like to the uninitiated!!
I wish I was in a better position financially , do they help pay for your gas ? that would be the first ? my better half would ask . Oh well I would love to help but with gas being so costly it just might not be possible /

yes, many do have gas money to help keep a driver on the road....
