Those of us who live in the states where the worse offenders need to get the word out. What gets me is how many have repeated warnings yet they are still in business. And so many do-it-yourself medical procedures without proper vet care.

Isn't a ranking of the worst puppy mills kind of the same as ranking the worst Steely Dan albums? They're all complete and utter crap and the world would be a better place without all of them.

I know that the Amish in Ohio are big offenders. The Amish are very cold hearted when it comes to animals. They are only for work or profit and nothing more.

Yes, and Iowa is right up there too. Our "wonderful" legislators have yet to understand the shame this brings on the state. Our companion animal protection laws also stink.

Most puppy mill puppies go to pet stores, large chain pet stores. When you buy a puppy from a pet store, there is no listing of where it came from or what farm bred it . Unless you are specifically looking for that. Most people (imo) don't take the time to look at this information when they are buying a puppy from a pet store.

So the people who are buying this "product" are not caring where it comes from.

It is very good to have this info, but in order for the situation to change, the laws have to change. Puppies are not "product" they are not "livestock".

And I happen to like Steely Dan, fwiw.

Why the hell doesn't the ASPCA, or whatever governing authority in these states shut these people down? All of these people are repeat offenders.

People need to stop buying dogs from pet shops...period. Until that happens, the puppy mills will stay in business.

The ASPCA is a rescue organization located in New York City ONLY. All SPCA's in all the cities and counties across the nation are separate, independent LOCAL groups and rarely have any legal authority to enforce any laws regarding care of animals. In a few locales some might be trained Humane Investigators who can assist animal control.

It is up the the legislatures in each of the 50 states to enact laws governing commercial breeding operations in their states. Missouri has tried and failed numerous times to pass stricter laws but faces enormous pressure against such changes from all sorts of groups including the AKC which makes a great deal of money from the registration fees paid for all those "purebred" puppies from mills.

The USDA is a fairly toothless organization with only a hand full of inspectors to oversee the approximate 10,000 puppy mills believed to exist in this country and most of them do not bother to get a license from the USDA at all. It's estimated that those mills produce over 2 million pups each year, very big $$$ business.
