All those things make me (a Detroit booster since the 80's) shake my head slowly and say probably not.
Ferndale maybe, but Redford? ha! trashy at its best

LOL... and where exactly in Detroit would I avoid the income tax, the higher car insurance and the slower police service? Sure some spots have their streetlights, but those other financial concerns are present anywhere in the city limits.

Well for one downtown and midtown has a hell of alot more police presence than anywhere else in the city. Especially with the WSU Police force. And then there are some neighborhoods (can't exactly remember) that have private security.

As you may have guessed, I am not from Detroit nor have I visited there. It seems to me, though, that there is a trend to remake Detroit desirable for white hipsters instead of the long-time residents.

Isn't much they can do for the neighborhoods.

That's what happens when you are flat broke.

Ideally the rebirth of downtown leads to (much) high tax revenues and, thus, services, improvement projects, etc.

But that would seem to be a very long way off.

I wouldn't say that. The trend is to make Detroit desirable for anyone with money. Too many of Detroit's long-time residents don't have a whole lot of income; the median household income is just under $26,000. Even for a city of 700,000, that's a lot of poor folks and it's pretty hard to support a city on nothing but poverty.

But, I'm pretty optimistic that once there's sustainable growth and revenue downtown, they'll use that to alleviate the problems of the neighborhoods. Some neighborhoods don't have to wait on downtown and already are finding ways to be sustainable on their own.

I would think that in a city with 700,00 residents there are quite a few on either side of 8 mile pointing fingers. Perfect example of my side, your side mentality.

Didn't Eminem kind of break down that whole "8 Mile barrier" thing?

Not at all. 8 Mile continues to be a major dividing line for the races.

That's changing.

The westside suburbs across 8 Mile are now majority black, and even Eastpointe is now only 68% white.

It'll be more accurate to say that it's a class border now.
