Default Old aerials of Oakwood and some Kettering

I recently ordered five photos from the historical society to see details of some cool aerial pictures of long gone scenes of the town where I grew up. I'm going to share it with family and friends, so I thought I would post the URL here for anyone familiar with the area from Stroop to the North part of Oakwood. The scenes of Far Hills passing by what would later become Fairmount West with barns and farmhouses on it is really neat.

Old Oakwood aerials

The shots show the Miami River and the NCR Factory in its full glory in the background.

If one is not familiar with Oakwood, much of the photos will be meaningless.

Anyone know the history of this building? I kept noticing it while driving through Dayton on I-75 and finally got off the interstate to get a photo.Dayton Pictures Thread-image.jpeg

Hey looks like I got here at a good time haha. Normally I don't post this fast, but looks like I'll be even faster than McDonald's! Wow. And very appropriate for this post.

That is the main building of the Ray and Joan Kroc Salvation Army center. The center was built on the former Dunnakirk estate, and the mansion is still on the property, now renovated, and surrounded by a variety of community buildings. When Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald's "founder" Ray Kroc (Mr. Kroc was the guy who made the McDonald brothers' concept big), passed away, she left a large part of her fortune to the Salvation Army to build community centers in struggling urban neighborhoods. By a good stroke of luck, this site was chosen for one of the centers, and today it stands.

I am not sure what all they do at the site, but here's a link:

Thanks, SWOH, for your quick reply and the great links. The Dayton Daily News link has some really nice pictures. Interesting history on the Krocs.

It is a very unique building and I would love to tour it sometime.

Default Aerial shots of Dayton from 50 to 100 years ago.

I busted the budget again and purchased five more pictures that I think show pretty neat views of Dayton. I spent $100 last year on aerials from Oakwood and now these five from Dayton.

I like the aerials since they cover a lot of acreage in one 3000 x2500 ( that's almost 8 million pixels ) pixel image. You can spend $20 for a shot of one house, but that's just nutty.

I posted them here: Old Dayton Aerials

The date range goes from a time when there was a functioning Miami-Erie Canal to just weeks before Rt-35 and I-75 changed things forever.

The previous post is about one year old, so I hope that this work gets some eyeballs.

From these pictures, one can get an idea of what Dayton looked like when downtown was primarily tree-lined streets where people lived and not some wasteland of parking lots, derelict factories and abandoned offices.

Please feel free to request something specific that I didn't include. I tried to think of a half-dozen highlights per picture. Also please feel free to public flaunt me for any errors I might have made. I've been feeling cocky recently and need to be taken down a peg.
