Basically what happened was a 6 year old kid flying alone was supposed to fly from Philadelphia to Fort Myers, Florida, but someone put him on a plane to Orlando. His grandmother was waiting for him in Fort Myers, the kid contacted her, and she drove to Orlando and picked him up.
Naturally, grandma is raising cain wanting to know how this happened.
I've read several different news stories on this and none of them mention who dropped off the kid in Philadelphia. Was it the parents? If so, where were they during all this?
Does anyone know who dropped off the kid and where they were?
I'm puzzled why the news doesn't mention the parents or guardian.
Spirit Airlines, like most airlines have rules for unaccompanied minors, and one of the requirements is that the person dropping off the child must escort the child to the departure gate and wait there for 15 minutes after the plane leaves. Did that happen? I should be clear: This is still Spirit Airlines fault.

Down near the bottom you'll see the guidelines "Parent/guardian dropping off the kid must stay at the gate after 15 minutes of the flight’s departure.
They should also -
Get a gate pass at the ticket counter
Escort the child to the gate
Remain in the gate area with the Unaccompanied Minor"
Anyway, I just think it's odd that only the grandmother was mentioned in the news.
I keep on thinking of the movie Home Alone when I hear this story. That being said this is disturbing on multiple levels.
Home Alone 2 is when he was sent to NYC instead of going with his family to Florida. Home Alone was when he was left behind in a Chicago suburb instead of going with his family to Paris.
This story certainly reminds of Home Alone 2.
The 6 year-old should get free flights for life on that airline as a true "I'm sorry" and discounts for the family whenever they want to fly with that airline to make up to unnecessary agony they put them through.
2 flights loading at same gate. Story says the PR flight was in process of boarding as kid walked up, he showed boarding pass, asked if right flight, told yes.
Odd that there was not a seating conflict before departure.

Once on the plane the pilot gets on and says something like 'welcome to 'Air line" "flight number" to "insert city name our flight time will be 'time in air' ...... Was the kid The Who's pinball wizard?
Good lord, if this represents our future, be afraid, very afraid.
Kid was a precocious 6 year old. He'd never been to Orlando and always wanted to greet the Mouse and Family at DW. Ft Myer only had a bunch of retired blue hairs at the local Steakhouse for the half price in before 4pm special, he chose wisely. Duped Spirit Airlines in the process.
If I was sending an unaccompanied six-year-old on a flight, you know what? I wouldn't scrounge around until I found a ticket on the most notoriously cheap airline out there.
I wouldn't put my baby in a used car-seat I bought at a garage sale, I wouldn't give my kid some $5 bike helmet from Kmart, and I wouldn't send my child solo on Spirit.

Kid probably had his earbuds in listening to Taylor Swift .

The 16 year old wasn't an unaccompanied minor. Passengers over the age of 14 are not classified as such (and frontier airlines doesn't offer the program for younger travelers). They are expected to handle themselves, and it's up to their parents to decide if they are mature enough for the responsibility.
The whole thing seems to be a series of minor mistakes and circumstances. Taken alone, the situation wouldn't have happened:
--If he'd arrived earlier, rather than just as the flight was boarding.
--If the gate attendant had scanned his boarding pass.
--If the flight had been full, another passenger would have been assigned to his seat.
--If he'd kept his earbuds off and listened to the announcements.
--If he'd read the gate signage.
His parents claim he suffers from 'flight anxiety' (despite this being his first time flying?) and called from PR in a panic, but he's certainly all smiles for the media.

Lol. You're probably right.
I'm stealing your idea, but I'm sending the kids to Fort Myers while I get on the "wrong plane" to Orlando.
