And that was not the first time there were problems that required in person assistance. Finally the elderly family member was brought back to Connecticut for easier care. It was not easy and it did hurt.
Those things can happen anywhere it’s part of life.
Maybe your kids and grandkids will spend their entire lives in Glastonbury but that’s not realistic for everyone

It's actually been uncommon the last several decades to spend a full life in one state. Moving is like any other big decision. It takes planning, and knowledge of the area one is going to. Like taking a new position, best done after carefully doing one's homework.

agree 100%.

If I could do it again, I would have spent at least 5 years in the Scottsdale, Az area while young (mid to late 20s), on top of Nashville metro where I was 1997-2014.

I am friends with many who have had kids live and marry overseas the last few decades.

This is usually the argument people make to others that don’t have children. “But who is going to take care of you when you’re old?”

I doubt most people say their own retirement goal is to take care of aging family for 5,10,15 years. “Yeah when I’m 62 I want to move back to take care of my Mother for the last 10 years of her life”

End of life plan shouldn’t be to assume someone else is gonna take care of you. That’s part of why we save for retirement, so we can live in 55+ or assisted living if necessary.

I hope someone doesn’t spend their entire life in Manchester, CT (or wherever) just because they feel obligated to be near family. If you want that for your life, wonderful, enjoy.

Keep in mind, the way some of these comments come off on a message board can sound harsh. “What do you mean you want to move, experience new things when old family needs you?”

Again, it’s a choice, your choice, and not an obligation/requirement. What would that family do in the unfortunate event that they didn’t outlive their own children, then what? Gotta have multiple plans/options in life for the what ifs

I didn’t expect it to be literally 100 degrees at night. It was incredibly difficult to make friends, and it was expensive, very expensive.”

Cummings expected she’d have extra money in her paycheck working as a private chef in the Palm Beach area since the state doesn’t have an income tax. But the high costs of car insurance, rent and food cut into that additional take-home pay. After six months of dealing with South Florida’s heat and traffic, she began planning a move back to the Northeast.

“I had been so disenchanted with Florida so quickly,” Cummings said. “There was this feeling of confusion and guilt about wanting to leave, of moving there then realizing this is not anything like I thought it would be

Well yeah, they always have to cherry pick for these sort of things, but make no mistake, people love this state to death no matter what. Look how seriously these Nutmeggars take the town tourny.
Even someone not as passionately in love with CT such as yourself is even coming back for a portion to Simsbury. That speaks volumes in and of itself. That's the power CT holds.
You walk around FL and every now and then you catch yourself looking over your shoulder for CT. It never leaves you.

If you or your family changed your life to help others, that’s commendable and wonderful, no problem with that.

One of the reasons I live where I do currently is I have multiple direct flight options to go “home” (where my parents live) very quickly when needed. It’s a 90 min flight and there are 3 options daily. I’ve gone home quickly for significant life events and health scares.
We are not talking about kids leaving their families, we were talking about retirees leaving when they retire. Of course this is a personal choice but you can’t say that no one is hurt when someone does this. Thats not true for many, if not most families. It’s pretty much a given that as people age they will likely need help. Not as common as the other way around.

The decision should be based on what is best for the individual, and their nuclear family that consistently resides with them. Not the extended family.

Those considering moves I always suggest visit OFTEN before making any move, research all the things important to you in making such a decision.
