I have my son's old HP laptop for my personal use (City-Data, only).

When my son gave it to me in Dec. the User Acc't I set up for myself was fine for about 2 weeks. Then suddenly, I started to loose my cursor on the screen. It was like it was going behind the pages I had opened up. I knew where it was if I moved the mouse and the invisible cursor landed on a link. It would highlight just as a link will do normally. I could left click and the link would open, but I had no control over where my cursor was.

I waited until I moved it around enough to highlight something and then used my up and down, left and right arrows to move around.

I set up a new acc't under users and the new one has been fine until today. It is doing the same crazy thing again. My son said that over the course of a year while he had it he probably set up 8 or 9 different user accounts for the same problem.

However, this time the new account has the problem as well. I think I need a new laptop at this point, but am leaving on vacation in a couple days and MUST have my C-D friends in this laptop on the trip with me!!

Has anyone run into this issue before? Any band-aid fixes? Any ideas of things to try? I am not terrific with my settings and such, but can find my way around the control panel, programs, etc.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, all!!

(I am so happy we have so many knowledgeable folks in the computer forum!! gem)

Work around?

Start>Control Panel>Mouse>Pointer Options Tab

Place a check in Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key

At least you'll find it! Assuming that works...

Thanks, Tek_Freek! Your right - all I have to do is find it. I will follow those steps. Right now, I am guessing while posting, left click, the position vertical shows up and then I use my up and down, right and left keys to manuever into position!

As you can imagine, it is taking me quite a while to get something posted and by then, everyone has moved on with cyber-life and my comment is irrelevant.

Thanks a lot. gem

Agreed. As I stated "a work around". I still have this niggling memory of a setting somewhere controlling the cursor being seen or not during certain operations on a computer, but I can't pinpoint it.

Probably a feature in Windows 3.1.

I was concuring with you, a few people here seemed to beleive it was a fix.

And I know what you're talking about... I just cannot remember where the hell that setting was.

OP: try going to Control Panel > Mouse > Pointer Options tab and uncheck the box, "hide pointer when typing"

You can also try changing the pointer's look to make it more visible.
