Hello,

I'm a graduate student in counseling living in the springs. I grew up with severe ADHD and still have a milder form of it today. I am looking to help out facilitating a child and/ or adult ADD/ADHD support group in the area, but I don't know where to start. Any ideas or people who may be interested?

I am assuming you mean support with behavior. I would suggest looking towards BACB- behavior consultants. David Hatfield, LaRee Kelly-Warner, and others are quite busy in the springs area working with schools and families with individuals who have disabilities on their behavior. However, in order to do what they do, you would need to become BACB certified. There are long waiting lists to get to see a BACB and the income for one can be anywhere from 55k to 90k (independently contracting yourself out).
Essentially what these guys do is watch someone in their natural environment, see what behavior is happening, and then using applied behavior analysis, work on behaviors. I have watched LaRee several times work with a kid who can't focus and pay attention (autism, aspergers, PDD, ADHD, ADD) and correct behaviors and also work on social skills.
Is this what you are hoping to do?

Yes it is, but I was also interested in working with some support groups in town for parents, also a little more geared to ADD or ADHD. Your information has been haelpful, and I appreciate it!

Where and how can I get certified?

Behavior Analyst Certification Board is the website. Look for approved courses. You can do this online or at a school (nothing local I'm afraid) and you also have praticum hours which are supervised under someone like LaRee or David. I would suggest you cruise the website and then contact one of them to find out more info. I am on my way to VA and will be starting at square 1 again myself. So, that's the extent of my help at this point. Good luck!
