Not sure if they will or won't. But if the Big 12 or now Big 10, gets another shake up like this one, I'm sure Texas will go independent. Could make alot better schedule that way too!

I'm not sure there is much reason left to go independent when you've already got your own $300M network. Even Notre Dame only is "independent" when it comes to football, and that's primarily for the TV revenues I thought. Otherwise it participates in the Big East conference, and that's absolutely necessary for those other sports.

Texas already almost has as much control over the Big 12 (now 10) as it would if it were independent. Plus the BCS tie-ins and bowl participation revenue splits would be tough to give up. Especially this past year, I think Texas got it's bowl share despite a 5-7 record.

Texas has more to gain with A&M, Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the mix than without them. Otherwise, they have no rivalries, only a fan base.

An independent Texas team could still maintain their rivalry with A&M and OU...
Similar to how Notre Dame maintains their rivalry with Army or USC.

I think the hype machine is being runup again.

This does provide even more money for Texas, but won't most of that money be funneled toward their general athletic department and not just football? After all, it's likely going to be a non football network (games anyways).

I don't think there is anything LEGAL that Texas could do that could give them any more advantage in football. This seems more like windfall for the olympic type sports.

That's likely the reason there's been no outcry from the rest of the Big 12, mainly olympic sports and it's only in Texas right? If so, I don't know where those ESPN blowhards got that cocamame about turning Texas into more of a "national school"?

It was such a step up in job title (DC vs. position coach), NFL vs. college, and a huge increase in salary (1.3M per year vs. <500K at UT). There was really no way for him to pass that up, the timing was just bad for UT. I don't blame him at all for leaving.

However, it should make the jobs at Texas just that much more appealing to career-minded coaches. The record of UT assistant coaches moving up to head coaching or other lofty positions is really amazing. Jerry Gray never even coached a game here and already got a huge promotion -- obviously that had nothing to do with his record at UT, but the amount of money that the Titans had to offer him was probably higher because he'd secured the UT job.
