Turns out alot of people in piedmont refer to anything east of Raleigh as down east. Also stated in the other thread, the media has indeed co-opted the term to mean the entire central coastal plain region. Though as I stated the term originated with the area easy of Beaufort in Carteret County. So basically it seems everyone was right in a sense. Still, as can be judged by the comments below the article as well as the article itself, the debate rages on.

I'm down at the Carteret County Courthose and just saw a license plate that said "mommickd". It brought a smile to my face.

UPDATE: I saw a business called "Down East" something-or-other (I want to say mobile homes, but I'm not sure) in Washington, NC the other day.

So I guess this is one of those make-up-your-own-rules type things.
