A lot of it has to do with white flight, but a lot of these places were previously occupied by people of all races, so it isn't solely white flight nor does is it solely a case of race.

Even the poor areas in California didnt start out that way.

Nineties Flava,
I know elderly people who grew up off of 88th and Macarthur(Oakland) that swear it was a quiet, nice and very safe area back in the 1940s and 1950s.

What decimated inner city neighborhoods as already eluded to above was 'white flight' to the new suburbs after WW2. They were car-oriented, had bigger lots, were larger and more spacious than what was then perceived as dirty and crowded inner cities.

So with the (white)middle class relocating to suburbia, that left only the very rich or the very poor in the inner cities.

Its a preview, of what will become of most of the nice suburbs that most of you grew up in outside of a major city.

When your old and gray you will go back to your childhood neighborhood and say to your grandkids "When I was your age this used to be such a nice palce".

The Old folks in my family always tell me about how nice North Philly, Germantown, and Norristown used be when they we're kids growing up in N. Philly, and its northwest burbs.

The only part of CA with houses like that is west oakland, but it actually looks bad... a lot of these east coast ghettos look old but not bad.

I often daydream about that. How ghetto my neighborhood will become in 30yrs. I always daydream about that.

Interesting factoid.

West Oakland was where Victorians from all over Oakland were physically taken off their foundations and moved to when the other areas began building newer homes. Thats' the reason why there are so many victorians there.

Sort of like a retirement home(or cemetary) for victorians...

Southern blacks took advantage of all the industrious jobs available in the Northeast/Midwest when the whites who originally had them were off at war (WWII) As time when on racial tension destroyed the cities causing major riots throughout the nation during the 60s (especially Newark and Chicago).

Housing then soared way below the average housing value as whites fled to the suburbs (white flight)........ than came crack 15 years later.

BTW, is a car on fire and a burnt house the best pictures you guys can find!? It seems intentional
