Wall Street employs a lot of tech grads. Finance is a HUUUGE tech sector, especially if you look at the amount of employment. Mainstream banks are not like startups, they can afford to hire a skyscraper full of people just for their IT division. They also pay pretty good salaries, since their brand is not as sexy as Facebooks and Amazons, but they still need the top talent to write their trading platforms.

What is considered tech? CS and IT majors only? Most of the jobs have "Engineer or Architect" in the title even though they are neither.

When they say Reston they probably mean the whole Reston area -- Herndon, Dulles, Ashburn, Chantilly and Tysons which are filled with IT companies.

There is A LOT of biotech in the west (SF and SD mostly). Many of the premier genomics companies are out here. I work at biotech company that is considered one of the first (if not the first) biotech companies ever - and we're not in Boston.

Nothing against Boston - it is also a great place to be if you want to be in Biotech. But it's certainly not the only one (and it's debatable if it's "number 1").

Probably because of competition. I used to work for a company based in MN, and seems upon graduation you can get any tech job in MSP - there are so many companies and they all seem to be hiring. Granted, much lower wages than other cities mentioned. In LA you have to hustle when looking for a good job even in "Silicon Beach" and probably won't be able to afford a house.

Totally. Raleigh as well. And for Denver I would imagine more Boulder jobs than DEN for tech.

Here's a nice article for comparison: The Global Cities Where Tech Venture Capital Is Concentrated - The Atlantic

Venture Capital Investment Per Capita: San Francisco & San Jose are number 1, LA is 10, NYC is 11.

That's still pretty much the DMV though...and rents aren't cheap in NOVA. It's disingenuous on their part and makes the list look strange. Most of my career has been spent living in MD, working at different Gov't sites in Downtown DC for IT companies whose HQ is in NOVA. You can't separate that area from the rest of the DMV and that is what that list is trying to do.

Fast forward this post three years later, and I don't know if that is an exaggeration.

Yes of course technically speaking Reston is a part of a larger DMV metro area, but I think the point is that the Reston, Tysons, Dulles/ Silver Line corridor is and has already emerged as a bonafide jobs hub or submarket within a larger metropolitan area. Just try a job search within the metro area and you will see that area split into it's own, separate from suburban MD, or DC, and sometimes even Arlington or Alex.

The amount of tech jobs and building going on along that stretch of the Dulles Toll Road is pretty strong at the point now where we can somewhat separate it from say Downtown Washington or even "inside the Beltway". Google's already announced it's continued expansion in Reston and AWS is already there along with many many gov't IT contract companies. If you include the stretch out towards the Loudoun County end of the SL, there are large scale developments planned with either data centers or other big tech expansions. If we're calling that entire stretch from Reston to it's West a "market" or "submarket" of it's own, I totally get it.

For the metrics listed in the OP's post, I totally understand why CA isn't listed. The cost of living is very high for the average person, but for a new college student just starting out, it's insane. The Buying Power in CA is abysmal. Paying off those student loans would be a huge struggle in CA. The Bay Area is oversaturated with tech and starting out in a smaller, more diverse tech area would be better for a newbie.
