Who cares, there are dozens, perhaps hundreds of monotonous cities that will suit most persons needs. This is similar to public opinion of many things American who prefer the taste of fast food and the zoo which is cable news channels. What we need is not more quantity of the Jacksonville's of the world, but more the quality of the New York's of the world. Unfortunately, there aren't that many New York's.

Actually from a governmental POV, the consolidated cities are doing quite well running their cities in relation to their peers who are smaller in land area. When Jacksonville finally gets its public transit system underway, it will be planned by a small handful of authorities/jurisdictions and it will be easier to implement.
The Atlanta MPO has about 80 jurisdictions, and they all fight and bicker about everything from taxes to policies to transit to whether there should be more splits or more annexations. It's a political bottleneck, whereas Indianapolis, Nashville, Lousiville, and Jacksonville have a much smoother process for getting just about anything done. Less administration is necessary, too, and firefighters/police/city services fall under one umbrella to manage rather than 20. Many cities are actually jealous of the consolidated government, and many have tried to push for it (it usually takes a long while to do, though).
Anyway, I agree that New York is special, but I thought I would pose a POV looking at it from a governmental perspective.
