There were two things that the Marriott family wanted in the Roy Roger's - great service and excellent, high quality food. Many of the recipes that they used in the old Hot Shoppes Cafeterias formed the basis of the Roy Roger's product.

Marriott's restaurant operations were doing quite well. They were sold off in 1987-89 to prevent bankruptcy brought on by some of the "finance experts" that they brought in to expand the hotel portfolio.

Yes, many a good company has been brought to its knees by the finance experts brought in to manage expansions.

Is there still a Roy Rogers on Route 32 just west of I-275?

Yes there is. I hear the restaurant is a little rundown but the food still good.

Just saw today that Frisch's has agreed to sell out its interest in the local Goldem Corral Chain. Frankly it surprises me becaue I thought they were doing OK. Bit it just goes to show how volatile the restaurant business is. Here today, gone tomorrow.

What's interesting is it is in a somewhat hidden location and still does enough business to stay open.

A LOT of people really liked Roy Rogers. Back when there was a location on the Ohio Turnpike years ago, we always stopped for the fried chicken. It was much better than most of the places in Ohio.

Hot Shoppes, Roy Rogers, and Farrell's Ice Cream - three first rate organizations.

Some of these operations are hard to evaluate. If you look at the statistics for the total Roy Rogers chain in their heyday, they were huge. If you look at it today, relatively it is a sprinkling around the country. The survivors have to be a few independent franchisees who just refused to give up. I give them credit for continuing to do what they do best and serving their customers.

Just like the old guys who kept their Burger Chef restaurants going until 2004.
