Yep, Tarbell owned Arnold's. And Mr Bench could well have had a stake in The Precinct, especially during the early years when Mr Ruby might've been looking for venture partners. History shows he had nothing to worry about, eh?

Opening a restaurant in the early 80s in Columbia-Tusculum was a dicey prospect, though. Mt. Adams was just starting to hit its stride, while Columbia-Tusculum was just a place to drive through on the way to the 'burbs, and was only beginning to be noticed as a rehab-able neighborhood.

My wild single girlfriends and I used to get all dolled up and hang out at the Precinct bar.

Grammer's plus is that it has a big parking lot. A big, fenced-in parking lot. That might help draw in people who might otherwise try out the restaurant, but freak out at having to walk a block or two.

Default Ewald's

Remember Ewald's Pet Store at the corner of 7th and Elm? A couple of doors down from it (across from Shillito's) was Chili Town, and next to it was a restaurant that had been there for years. Can't remember the name.
I can remember looking through the windows at
Ewald's. The exterior seemed dated, even back in the
1960's.

A few people had commented on The Mill in other
threads, with some contention about its location.
Chili Town is also a vague memory, although I cannot
recall ever eating there.

Fourth St. had a lot of places, catering to both shoppers
and workers. Graeter's had a soda fountain open into
the evening - we would sometimes go there after a
movie at one of the RKO theaters. Frisch's had a
coffee shop with a long (winding?) counter; I can still
remember their old "filet of sole" sandwiches. Given
that the upscale women's clothier, Gidding-Jenny,
was nearby, there were probably fancier lunch spots
around as well.

A few blocks to the north, across from the Crosley
studios, was a lunch counter. WLW personalities
could be spotted there having a quick bite.

To the east, near Acres of Books, was a health-food
store - way before such places became the norm.
It, too, seemed to have been around for many years.

Speaking of the (now defunct) Acres of Books, I was
surprised to learn that a much larger store of the same
name exists in Long Beach, CA. Apparently, the founder
of the Cincinnati store, Bertrand Smith, had later moved
to the West Coast, where he opened and ran this store.

I remembered that the name of the place next to Chili Town across from Shillito's was Temple's Delicatessan.

The West is the Best, just like Jim Morrison said. When I dined at Rondo's they didn't have a liquor license yet. It wasn't a very good location anyway.

And I will miss Habig's.

Oh yes - another place that had completely slipped from memory. We
actually used to go there a lot. As a kid, I disliked this place intensely
but, on reflection, now have no idea what the problem could have
been.

Wink F&N Steakhouse

I grew up on Mary Inglis Hwy. and was friends with Renee Thomas, (the neice of Gene Thomas, who ran the place). Renee and I were friends for one summer! (that's all my parents would allow) I can remember eating there for lunch! We would just walk through and tell the cooks what we wanted and presto. I thought that so cool. One day Renee dared me to climb onto the roof and under some electric lines. She said she had done it before, so of course I had to! My father just happened to be driving past the place. Boy did I get it when I got home. It was pointed out, that I could have been a "fried 11 yr. old" I do remember now how loud the lines hummed, as I crawled under them! They did have amazing steaks!!! Come to think of it, Renee and her mother lived in the house right next to the F&N.

I think no more are 'round, they've all been run into the ground. LOL. They're completely extinct up my way (Boston area) now. Never even noticed any around Cincinnati.
