i guess i consider a quarter cent tax trivial. it may amount to $10 a year for me, which is about one-fifth of one-percent of my salary. for those in mason, it will cost, what, maybe $5?, and you can choose to shop closer-to-home and it will cost nothing. and that is for both union terminal and music hall. to me, those are trivial costs. if our tax dollars were a pizza, this piece is like the pizza crumbs that are left on the sharp part of the knife after you cut a slice.

progmac--

A quarter cent may be trivial.... but the trouble is, the seven cents it's on top of isn't trivial. That's thousands of dollars per year. Because every noteworthy building or project screams for funding. The zoo wants money, the parks want money, Metro wants money, the stadium deal eats money like it's nobody's business, and on and on.

Union Terminal is worth saving. And I want to save it. But you've got to find another way other than levying another tax, as taxes are already too high.

If less than 3 cents a day is creating serious hurt for you, then you are in MAJOR trouble. (I know, there are many people out there who are in tight situations, but I would hope they would have enough sense to be spending their time and resources in more productive ways than complaining on an internet forum).

^^^The problem is that we get nickled and dimed to death in this manner. Everyone and his brother finds a way to justify a new tax of say a quarter cent on the dollar, three quarters etc. Add them all up and it turns out to be a fair chunk of change out of our wallets.

Very good comment. And virtually every tax which is enacted stays there forever.

This is correct. I think the telephone tax that was enacted in the early part of the 20th century is still showing up on our phone bills.

There was once a system called 'zero based budgeting': start from scratch and i.d./price what you need, then look at other items. Something like taking the barnacles off the bottom of a boat?

In reality that's just to make it seem less empty when people do go there. High speed elevators? For a four story building? Waste of money. Same with some of the other stuff.

I'm fine with Union Terminal being fixed. It is an anchor on the west end and if it should disappear there is no hope for that part of town IMO.
I agree with you here. I don't think everything we do needs to be a Cadillac restoration. Both union terminal and music hall have such a high level of inherent value that 'modernizing' isn't really necessary. I'm primarily concerned with making sure they remain in reasonable condition for as long as we have a functional civilization.
