Depends what you mean by unmarked. Michigan uses cop cars without the light bar on top, but they still have the police stickers on the sides and front of the car.

I remember years ago when I-70 was first built, going to Pittsburgh to a job site. After crossing the WV state line at Wheeling I did not realize they suddenly dropped the speed limit to 35. For several years a stretch of I-70 was uncompleted through WV towards Pittsburgh. Suddenly I realized I was being flagged down by a WV state patrol car. I almost ignored it as it was a rusted out old Lincoln with no state markings. The light and siren were one of those reach up and put it on the roof types. After I answered the officer's questions he let me off with a warning, we don't drive here like the maniacs in Ohio. I was glad to get off without a citation, but my associate and I had to really struggle to keep from laughing at the comical appearance of the WV state patrol. No wonder the speed limit was 35, I don't believe that old smoke belching Lincoln could do over 50.

Great story, KjBrill! I'm not sure we'll ever eliminate speed traps. But the one Arlington Heights has on I-75 is ESPECIALLY dangerous. As often as I run through the city on I-75 in a big truck, I'm always worried that I won't be able to stop when one of the A.H.P.D cruisers pulls from the shoulder to go after their next victim...

The first step to eliminating speed traps is to have speed limits based on 85th percentile measured vehicle speeds, as measured by traffic engineers. That is how speed limits are SUPPOSED to be set.

You're ABSOLUTELY correct, ram2! However, rational speed limits don't generate revenue...

Hi Crew Chief--

There's an easy way to eliminate this: a State law that requires the revenue from tickets to go somewhere else: such as the State's road fund, or some other semi-useful purpose, rather than a city's general fund.

Of course, that may cause the highway patrol to become even more ubiquitous a fixture among Ohio's medians everywhere, but at least it won't go towards some asinine little village (see: New Rome, Ohio).

I guess their vacation is over. I was travelling westbound on Galbraith today and a cop car was off the side of Galbraith Rd. at the north bound ramp to I-75 and was hidden by weeds. He woud have had to drive up the ramp to I-75 and pulled off the side of the road and was facing backwards. He pulled out in front of me, just barely missing me (no lights or siren). He turned on lights and siren after going a few yards. I caught up with him at Burns and Galbraith. He had pulled someone over. I was trying to see who he was chasing, but could not tell until I reached Burns. I guess they need to start raising money again.

According to the prosecutor's comments on the news tickets are their main source of income. They have no legitimate excuse for existence in my opinion. Well, the prosecutor said the basically the same thing - that they should dissolve.

I was travelling west on Galbraith from Reading Rd. last night (Sat.) and noticed the Arlington Heights police (2 cars) had pulled over a car just east of the I-75 underpass. I guess the coffers must need to be filled. That little stretch must be in their jurisdiction. I saw a sign on a fence along Galbraith that mentioned a couple of bands playing on 9/7/2013 at their city hall. Must not have been a money maker.
